Responsible design statement

Through this project I wanted to talk about women’s equality in society, And the use of sustainable bridal fabrics to promote equality for women. And to fight against the oppression of women’s bodies. To satirize the phenomenon of women being controlled by the patriarchal society for a long time. To encourage women to liberate their body and spirit, and to challenge men’s cognition and expectation of women’s body, to break the original stereotype of women, to pursue independent and confident women of the new era.

I went further on the basis of Project 4 of Stage 1. In terms of clothes, I kept the clothes of the Victorian period. 19 century Crinoline braces and girdles. I continued to study the harm of corset on women’s bodies, for women need to wear orthotics to adjust their bodies. To study the relationship between orthodontics and the female body. And through that I’m going to think about how to deconstruct orthotics in clothing.

I extracted the exaggerated waist and rotator cuff silhouette in the Victorian period, to reflect the “perfect body” of women and to satirize the image of women in the patriarchal society. With soft
transparent gauze fabric, combined with strong acrylic material as decoration. And redesigned the structure of the orthotic device to integrate with the clothing to reflect the bondage of women. In the clothing, tight waist and loose skirt, as well as exaggerated bubble sleeves to reflect the female characteristics. Soft and transparent elastic fabric to reflect the soft and hard side of women. Then in the selection of fabrics, I want to use some stiff fabrics to present the characteristics and outline of women’s waist and chest. Through the above design to express this theme concept.

Fabric elements such as drape, lace, girdle and cowhide are also essential elements of the project. Present retro girlish feeling, break away from the traditional frame.

Through this project, I want to promote the equality of women, gender, marriage and society. To present my image of the modern woman. While women get rid of the bondage of the old times, modern women pursue romantic, free, naughty and brave female spirit. as well as the cultural appreciation of clothing. To express my design concept while encouraging people to pursue quality. Buy less choice quality. I will promote my clothes through small batch production.

The main purpose of this project is to discuss the female stereotypes and contemporary female Femininity under male aesthetics, focusing on fashion.

In the part of visual Research, I focused on the harm caused by orthotics to women and the uncomfortable and distorted aesthetic feeling. Extract the orthotic structure and combine it with the garment. Experiment is used to discuss the relationship and shape between orthotics and the body.

Historical Research is inspired by clothing of the Victorian period and braces of that time. The style of clothing is exaggerated corset and waist structure. Tight waist and loose skirt, as well as bubble sleeve elements to reflect the feminine characteristics. And Corset’s pattern, silhouette. Conduct research and use of materials and fabrics for corset.
Most of the inspiration for 2D and 3D exploration comes from my historical research. I use vintage elastic bras combined with calico to do draping on the stage to get the silhouette.

Colour research I mainly focus on light colors. In the use of fabrics, I will try to apply the elements of fish bones and chest pads to put other parts of the body. Make the design free from the constraints of women’s waist. Soft and transparent elastic fabric to reflect the soft and hard side of women.

Sampling part, such as the use of hook eye and buckles, and the processing of hem and other edge finishing. And I observed the techniques of the shirts and the treatment of ruffers. And the processing of chest pads

In the process of development, it is difficult to get the material of braces.I tried to use a heat gun to heat the acrylic to form different shapes of the braces.
