The Lost Collection of Terri P. Sheach
Folklore is a uniquely human language used to cement our sense of self within our surroundings. For me, the ‘myth of Scottishness’ can be understood as a cultural cloak we use in order to facilitate this grounding of identity. The myth of Scottishness refers to the commodified image of Scotland which has come to be globally representative of Scottish identity and culture and can be directly linked to the imagery presented to us by the 19th Century novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott.
The Lost Collection of Terri P. Sheach aims to highlight how deeply the Scottish Myth impacts the formation of our collective cultural identity, using a dystopian speculative approach to explore how the biography of this shared identity materialises. I adopted a lighthearted point of view with this project and this is evident in the name of the elusive doctor, which is an anagram of my own name; a nod to Jamie Shovlin’s seminal show Naomi V Jelish (2004).
