This architectural design project explores the creation of the sacred sense of modern church architecture. The key theme of this project is to research light use and the relationship between modern sacred space and urban space. According to research, the utilization rate of church buildings in Glasgow has declined rapidly since 1950, and a large number of church buildings have now ceased to be used as churches. For example, Glasgow Cathedral, the only undamaged Church in Scotland after the reformation, was closed. The surrounding area has a large number of religious and cultural heritage buildings, such as Glasgow cemetery and bridge of sighs. This area once had a profound impact on the development of Glasgow. People are forgetting this “sacred area”, and young people in Glasgow are losing their understanding and experience of church culture. Therefore, it is necessary to build new modern Christian Architecture in Glasgow Cathedral area to improve the relationship between “Glasgow sacred area” and modern city.

The project aims to revitalize the area by building a new chapel with the design of “sacred road” and indirect light, and establishing a new connection between Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow cemetery and Glasgow urban space. The design uses squares, ramps and balconies to establish a sacred route. People can see the whole Glasgow Cathedral area as they walk up. Different from the traditional church, the ground floor of this design is designed as a public space to connect the church and Glasgow City space. In addition, the design takes indirect light as the theme to reflect the sacredness inside the church.
