Final Look

The aim of my project was to research and develop a collection of outdoor garments by recycling and repurposing second hand outdoor equipment and clothing. I chose to follow the silhouette brief as I wanted to build experience and skills in this area of design.

During the research stage of this project I investigated and documented shapes, silhouettes and functionality of a number of second hand jackets and outdoor wear. I explored how these practical and durable garments could be used to develop a new range of contemporary fashion items that still served their purpose. I carried out initial 3D collaging on the body to create new and interesting silhouettes. I photographed the colour combinations of the recycled items I had collected which are often bright and bold. For my secondary research I looked into contemporary fashion designers with a similar tactical and militaristic style to myself , focusing mainly on silhouette, material and functionality of their garments and the aesthetic this brought to them.

As I began my development stage I worked in 2D and 3D collaging in order to develop my contemporary silhouettes and give my project a broad range of unique designs. I also considered the functionality of the buckles, straps and adjustments of these items and how they could be incorporated into my designs. I pushed my development work though photoshop visualisations and physical sampling on the body and a mannequin. This allowed me to bring my 3D and 2D collages to life.

For the final stage of my project, I took my development visualisations and initial sample visualisations and narrowed them down into a strong, limited piece collection. I further developed my 6 digitalised looks through extensive 3D collaging and working with recycled garments on the body and mannequin and then built upon them digitally. I chose to take route three and focused on making one quality look with garments that are sustainable and ecologically friendly. I achieved this by keeping my processes and development as sustainable as I could , and considered this when manufacturing my garments. I created a collection of contemporary, unique, recycled garments that keep their original practicality and functionality but appeal to a new generation of fashion consumers.
