Greta Martyniuk
Greta Martyniuk is a Polish contemporary painter who is based in Edinburgh. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2020, with a BA(Hons) in Painting and Printmaking. She also holds an MLitt in Fine Art Practice, which she also studied at the Glasgow School of Art.
Greta’s works are characterised by their unsettling and surreal imagery depicting the dehumanising aspect of the recovery process. Focusing her works on the topic of Trauma, she works in watercolour, ink and oil; producing works which show figures in distressing situations, surrounded by strange settings to awaken the curiosity of the viewer. She creates the paintings as she goes, producing spontaneous compositions which explore the relationship between the medical, the body and the mind. Greta’s paintings challenge the viewers’ perception of the recovery process, while encouraging them to emotionally engage with the works.
Trauma Series 1
This trauma series consists of six paintings, each one depicting the dehumanising aspect of the recovery process and the effects of trauma on ones mental and physical state. The fast pace, spontaneous paintings explore the relationship between the medical, the body and the mind.
Trauma Series 2
This series continues to explore issues surrounding trauma and the recovery process – working on a large scale, the artist makes the paintings up as she goes. The process becomes as important as the resolved work; she has no control over how her paintings will turn out, just as one has no control over being involved in a traumatic event.
Traumatic Encounters
This triptych consists of three large scale canvases(each measuring approx. 240cm x 160cm). The piece explores the struggles of dealing with trauma; the nude figures representing the dehumanising aspect of the recovery process.
